Learn more about using this online Spanish textbook
Each lesson of the Spanish textbook contains several sections, which we describe in more detail here.
Intro: This section outlines the learning goals of a lesson. If you take online Spanish classes you might spend 2 or more sessions with your teacher on each lesson, depending on your experience in studying languages, the time you spend on repeating the material in between lessons and a lot of other factors.
Vocab Canvas: With the help of an illustration you learn new vocabulary for a specific topic. If you are studying by yourself at the moment, you might find it helpful to start by looking through the vocabulary list for the lesson and maybe study it with our vocabulary tool. Afterwards you can test your knowledge by checking if you can name everything on the vocab canvas.
Reading: Here you see one or two texts that use the new vocabulary and introduce one or two new grammar points. If you are studying by yourself, you should try to understand the text first. If you find it difficult, take a look at the grammar section of the Spanish textbook or clarify the meaning of some new words in the vocabulary section.
Talking: In this exercise you will conduct a situation specific dialogue with your teacher to bring the vocabulary to first active use. To do this exercise by yourself, you could check if you know how to say all the points listed in the exercise.
Storytelling: Here you find a few illustrations, which tell a short story. You typically use them to further practice your narrating skills. If you are doing the exercise by yourself, you could write down your short story or tell it to a friend who is also studying Spanish.
Culture: This section provides you with some cultural background information. It can serve as a starting point for discussions with your teacher who – living in a country where the language is spoken – is a valuable resource on cultural aspects. If you are currently not taking online Spanish classes, you can use the culture section of the textbook as a starting point for exploring the culture using online resources.
Grammar: This section of the online Spanish textbook explains some grammar points that are introduced in the Reading part of the lesson in more detail. We plan to add exercises for practicing the new Spanish grammar points soon, so stay tuned!
Writing: This section trains your writing skills; typically your teacher will give it to you as homework. If you are currently studying Spanish by yourself, you could try to get a friend who speaks Spanish better to help you check your writing exercise.
Vocabulary: Here you find a list of the new Spanish vocabulary introduced in each lesson. After reviewing the Spanish vocabulary you can study in it our vocabulary tool. There are three different types of exercises that will help you learn your new Spanish vocabulary: first the "Seeds" section which is a flashcard tool, then the "Greenhouse" where you can test your knowledge of your Spanish vocabulary with a multiple choice tool, and finally the "Garden" where you need to type the translation of the English or Spanish word. You will typically find the vocabulary for each lesson by going to "copy" vocabulary and searching for the tag of the respective lesson, e.g., "lesson 1" for the first online Spanish class.
