Tagalog is a language spoken in several countries, most notably in the Philippines. It is considered to be either the first or second language in Philippines, and around 90 million people in the country speak the language. In the United States and Saudi Arabia, there are more than one million people who speak Tagalog. The standardized form of this language is called Filipino.
History of the Language
Tagalog is a combination of two words- ‘taga’ and ‘ilog’. The former means ‘native’ and the latter means ‘river’, so the literal translation of this word is ‘native of the river’. That is why Tagalog is also used to refer to the race of people native to the central Luzon in the Philippine Islands. The source of this language is not known and is still disputed to some extent. The first ever recorded use of written Tagalog was in 900 AD. The first complete book written using this language can be traced back to 1593. The year 1937 saw Tagalog being selected as the national language of Philippines by the NLI (National Language Institute). Over the years, the language was renamed twice over the years until the year 1959, when the language was renamed as Filipino. In 1987, the newly established constitution of Philippines named Filipino as the national language, and pledged that the language would develop over time on the basis of other languages spoken in the country. However, there is still very little difference between standardized Filipino and traditional Tagalog even after so many years.
