Tagalog is a language spoken in several countries, most notably in the Philippines. It is considered to be either the first or second language in Philippines, and around 90 million people in the country speak the language. In the United States and Saudi Arabia, there are more than one million people who speak Tagalog.
History of the Language
Tagalog is a combination of two words- ‘taga’ and ‘ilog’. The former means ‘native’ and the latter means ‘river’, so the literal translation of this word is ‘native of the river’. The source of this language is not known and is still disputed to some extent. Over the years, the language was renamed twice over the years until the year 1959, when the language was renamed as Filipino. Yet, it is still widely called Tagalog today.
